Pericarditis complicating a case of meningococcal meningitis.

A rare case of reactive pericardial effusion with cardiac tamponade subsequent to meningococcal meningitis.

We report a case of cardiac tamponade in a child with meningococcal disease. Although purulent meningococcal pericarditis is more frequent in children, we found a reactive pericardial effusion responsive to steroids and consistent with a rare immune-complex associated pericardial involvement.

Meningococcal pericarditis in the absence of meningitis.

A 16 year-old female presented with cardiac tamponade due to purulent meningococcal pericarditis without concomitant meningitis or meningococcaemia. She recovered after aspiration of the pericardial effusion and administration of a high dose of benzylpenicillin via a continuous infusion.

Spinal cord dysfunction complicating meningococcal meningitis.

A 29 year old male developed paraplegia during the acute phase of meningococcal meningitis. Possible mechanisms for this unusual complication are discussed and the literature regarding spinal cord complications of pyogenic meningitis is reviewed.
